“I think about locking Myrcella in a crypt. I think about her beautiful little face starting to collapse. Don’t think about it. I have to. I have to. It’s not right she has to suffer alone. She’s not suffering. She’s gone. No one can hurt her anymore.”

Clarke and Lexa always know what each other is thinking when they don’t say it out loud. They can sense what each other needs in that moment or the subtext of what they are saying. For example, in 3x07 Clarke came into Lexa’s room and said, “Someone tried to kill you today. How are you this calm?” and Lexa was able to read Clarke so well and said, “You’re angry about the kill order.” Clarke saying “I love you” in 3x16 was greater than just her confession that she loves Lexa, it was also a plea of “don’t leave me”.
In Clarke’s life, the people she loves die and leave her. Jake, Wells, and Finn are the ones we see in the show. Each one of these people loved her and in their finale moments together were trying to protect Clarke due to loving her. Jake was protecting Clarke by telling her to not go public or tell anyone that she knew about the failing life support. Wells had been protecting her heart from being broken by knowing that her mother was the reason why her mother died. Finn turned himself in to protect her and everyone else from the grounders attacking due to his mistakes. Now, the one that hurts the most – Lexa. Lexa loves her and died indirectly due to protecting her and her relationship to Lexa. Clarke feels like the grim reaper and everything that she loves is killed. She is cursed. She is cursed to be alone in this world. She is cursed to live a solitary life…it is what she deserves. Maybe she doesn’t deserve better than just surviving. ALIE!Raven was right, she wants to save everyone, but she is actually the one people need saving from. Her love is a death sentence. She is deserving of her title, The Commander of Death. That is who she is.
Clarke’s last words before Jake was floated was “I love you”, her last words before she slid the knife into Finn’s chest was “I love you too”, and now her last words to Lexa is “I love you”. Lexa knows how alone Clarke feels in this world and the burdens she carries. Lexa is the only person that will ever understand Clarke without Clarke having to tell her – she just knows. She knows because she carries similar ghosts, burdens, and heartaches. Lexa has lived a life feeling so alone and being told that due to who she is she must live a solitary life. Lexa hearing Clarke’s confession is something she already knows to be true. Lexa knows that Clarke loves her. She knew from the looks Clarke gave her, the kisses they shared, the kisses placed on her flesh, and from the caring touches that were filled with so much love and devotion. Clarke’s smile and feelings of content in Lexa’s presence show the trust and care she had towards her. Clarke’s plea of “I want you” was a confession of love without saying the four letter word. Love is not something that needs to be validated by a four letter word – it is something felt and is unspoken. Eyes are the window to a person’s soul and gazing into Clarke’s eyes, Lexa could see how much Clarke loved her with all her mind, body and soul.
In this final moment Clarke grabs onto Lexa and desperately says, “No, Lexa. I love you.” with a panicked look on her face. Lexa is able to read the subtext of what Clarke saying “I love you” to her is. It is her saying “don’t leave me. Don’t leave me like everyone else i love has. I am so alone in this world. Please don’t leave me. Not again.” Lexa sees that and replies what Clarke needs to hear, “I will always be with you”. Clarke doesn’t need to hear Lexa say “I love you”…she too already knows Lexa loves her. What Clarke needs to hear is what Lexa says to her…“I will always be with you”. Even if Clarke is not implanted with the Flame, Lexa will always be with her. Clarke will feel Lexa’s warmth as the sun shines upon her face. She will see her beauty in the trees that surround her. She will smell her in the wildflowers on a breeze. In these moment she won’t be stranded on the ground alone…Lexa will be there with her – always.
